Podcast Summary: Revolutionizing Business Rule Management with BRCC

In this episode, we dive deep into the innovative Business Rule Completeness Conjecture (BRCC) and explore its potential to transform how businesses define and manage their rules compared to traditional ontology-based approaches like RDF/OWL.

Starting Point:

Traditional RDF/OWL Implementations We began by discussing a "Hello World" example using OWL/RDF to model a company with employees in C# . This foundational setup included defining classes such as Company and Employee, and properties like EmployeeCount. The initial implementation classified a company as a LargeCompany if it had more than 50 employees. We walked through the formal OWL/RDF structures, provided an English specification for developers, and showcased a sample C# program using the dotNetRDF library to interact with the RDF data.

Evolving the Model:

Introducing Managers As the conversation progressed, we introduced more complex business rules. The ontology was expanded to include a Manager class, additional properties like hasManager and managerCount, and updated the criteria for a LargeCompany to require more than 30 employees and at least 5 managers. Detailed diff scripts illustrated the precise changes needed in both the ontology and the C# code, highlighting the challenges of maintaining and scaling RDF/OWL-based systems.

Introducing BRCC:

A Paradigm Shift Transitioning from the complexities of RDF/OWL, we introduced BRCC—a conjecture positing that business rules can be fully defined using five primitives within an ACID-compliant schema: data, parent lookups, child aggregations, and calculated fields. Unlike RDF/OWL, BRCC emphasizes declarative semantics (the WHAT) over procedural code (the HOW), ensuring semantic fidelity and portability across various platforms.

BRCC vs. Traditional Approaches We compared BRCC with RDF/OWL, highlighting BRCC’s advantages:

  • Simplicity and Maintainability: BRCC’s declarative nature reduces complexity, making it easier to manage and scale.

  • Semantic Fidelity: Ensures consistent meaning across different systems without the need for constant synchronization.

  • Portability: Facilitates seamless migration and integration with tools like Baserow and Airtable, which are BRCC-compliant and offer user-friendly interfaces for defining business rules.

Practical Implementation with Baserow To illustrate BRCC’s practical benefits, we walked through implementing the same company management model in Baserow. This involved creating interconnected tables for Companies, Employees, and Departments, using Baserow’s built-in features for parent lookups, aggregations, and calculated fields. The BRCC approach demonstrated how business rules could be maintained declaratively, ensuring data integrity and reducing the overhead associated with traditional coding methods.

Future Directions: SSoT.me Protocol

We also touched on the SSoT.me Protocol and CLI, an open-source framework designed to export BRCC-compliant models to machine-readable formats like JSON, XML, and YAML. This protocol aims to enable seamless integration and high semantic fidelity across diverse programming environments (e.g., .NET, Python, SQL databases), fostering a unified and portable approach to business rule management.

Conclusion:

Embracing BRCC for the Future The episode concluded with a strong endorsement of BRCC as a forward-thinking solution that addresses the limitations of syntax-locked, ontology-based systems. By adopting BRCC, businesses can achieve more consistent, scalable, and maintainable rule management, paving the way for more efficient and adaptable organizational processes.
